Medical Weight Loss Explained
Temecula Medical Group
Primary Care Clinic, Direct Primary Care (Concierge Medicine), & Wellness Clinic located in Temecula, CA
Losing weight can feel overwhelming, but it becomes far more achievable with the right medical guidance and ongoing support. At Temecula Medical Group, Dr. Richard Rawson, DO, Ryan D. Rowan, PA-C, Kathryn Pawelek, FNP-C, and our team help patients reach healthier weights safely and sustainably through personalized, medically supervised plans.
We offer two clear pathways so you can receive care in the way that best matches your needs and goals.
Understanding the Difference: Clinical Treatment vs. Medical Weight Loss
Some of the same medications used for medical weight loss (such as certain GLP-1 medications) are also used to treat specific health conditions. It is important to understand the distinction, so you receive the right type of care.
Clinical Treatment of Health Conditions
When a patient has an established medical condition such as type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, or other related issues, treatment is focused on managing that condition. Weight loss may occur as a beneficial effect, but the primary goal is clinical improvement of the underlying health problem.
At Temecula Medical Group, patients who need this type of clinical treatment are seen in our Temecula clinic. Our providers evaluate the full medical picture, coordinate care, and manage these conditions in person or through hybrid visits as appropriate.
Medical Weight Loss
Other patients primarily want support with weight management itself. They may or may not have additional diagnoses. In these cases, the focus is a structured, clinician-guided weight-loss program that can include medication when appropriate, lifestyle coaching, and ongoing support.
For patients whose main goal is medical weight loss, we are happy to help through our convenient online program. This pathway is designed for accessibility, flexibility, and comprehensive remote support.
Both pathways require a licensed provider evaluation. Medications are prescribed only when clinically appropriate. Compounded medications (when used) are patient-specific and have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality.

What Are the Risks of Being Overweight?
More people than ever struggle to maintain a healthy weight. In the United States, more than 93 million adults — roughly two in five — have obesity (BMI of 30 or higher).
Carrying excess weight raises the risk of high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and unhealthy triglyceride levels, which in turn increase the chance of heart attack or stroke. It also elevates the risk of:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Gallbladder disease
- Certain cancers, including breast and liver cancer
The good news: losing just 5–10% of your body weight can meaningfully reduce many of these risks.
How Does Medical Weight Loss Work at Temecula Medical Group?
We take a comprehensive, health-first approach. Our programs combine medical evaluation, personalized medication options when appropriate, lifestyle support, and ongoing coaching so you can lose weight efficiently and keep it off.

Care Coaching – Support That Goes Beyond Medication
Medication is only one part of lasting success. Our Care Coaching is designed to help you build sustainable habits.
Sessions typically begin within the first couple of doses and continue on a flexible cadence (often every two weeks, adjusted to your preference). Working with a care coach, you develop a living Care Plan that can address:
- Side-effect management and medication adherence
- Nutrition strategies suited to medical weight loss
- Lifestyle and appropriate exercise
- Emotional eating patterns
- Stress management
- Sleep hygiene
- Social situations (holidays, eating out, family gatherings, etc.)
The approach is supportive, practical, and focused on goals you set for yourself. You receive clear summary materials after each module.
Why Nutrition and Exercise Still Matter
Sustainable weight loss rests on two foundational pillars:
Nutrition: Focus on whole foods, limit highly processed items, and reduce added sugars. Our team helps you identify and overcome the specific dietary roadblocks that have held you back.
Exercise: Regular movement helps burn calories, builds strength and mobility, improves sleep, increases daytime energy, and reduces unhealthy cravings. We provide guidance on activity that is realistic and appropriate for your current fitness level and health status.
Whether you choose in-clinic care or the online program, these lifestyle elements are woven into your personalized plan and reinforced through coaching.
