What are physicals?
Physicals are head-to-toe assessments to evaluate your overall health and fitness. They help identify potential health problems early and give you a chance to discuss concerns, medications, lifestyle, and preventive care with your provider.
What happens during physicals?
A physical exam typically includes a medical history review and physical exam (vitals, heart/lungs, reflexes, etc.). Additional tests or immunizations may be recommended based on your needs.
Are there different types of physicals?
The Temecula Medical Group offers several types of physicals, including:
COVERED SERVICES (Usually Billed to Insurance)
These are considered medically necessary or preventive and are generally covered by Medicare, Medi-Cal, and most private plans (co-pay or deductible may apply):
Annual Physicals — Routine check-ups focused on overall health maintenance.
Initial Health Assessment (IHA) — Required comprehensive exam for new Medi-Cal patients.
Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) — Medicare visit to create or update a personalized prevention plan (not a full “head-to-toe” physical).
Well-Woman Visits — Preventive gynecologic and health screenings for women.
NON-COVERED SERVICE, or "Administrative Physicals" (Self-Pay)
These are typically not covered by insurance because they are required by a third party and there is no medical complaint or necessity:
Sports Physicals — school and club sports teams require that your child have a sports physical before starting a new season. This exam ensures that your child is healthy enough to play sports.
School Physicals — school districts often require annual physical exams before the start of the school year. All students are also required to start the school year up to date on their immunizations.
Pre-Employment / Work Physicals — often necessary to start a new job with specific physical requirements.
Travel or mission physicals — If you’re traveling abroad for vacation, business, or a mission trip, you must have certain vaccinations, depending on your destination. A travel physical helps ensure that you don’t contract communicable diseases while abroad.
Many insurance plans (including Medicare and Medi-Cal) explicitly exclude “services required by third parties” such as schools, employers, or travel organizations. In these cases, we offer the service as a convenient self-pay visit with a signed waiver. A forms fee may apply if forms need to be completed outside of a scheduled appointment.
