Tuberculosis Testing (TB Testing)

What is TB Testing?

Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially serious bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, most commonly affecting the lungs but possibly other parts of the body. Many people have latent TB infection (no symptoms, not contagious) without knowing it. TB testing screens for exposure to TB bacteria.

Two main types of TB tests we offer:

  • TB Skin Test (TST/PPD or Mantoux test) — A small amount of testing material is injected under the skin of your forearm. You return in 48-72 hours for the provider/MA to read the reaction (induration).
  • TB Blood Test (IGRA/QuantiFERON) — A simple blood draw analyzed in a lab for immune response to TB proteins. Often preferred for convenience (one visit) or for patients with prior BCG vaccination or those who may not return for a reading.

These tests detect infection but do not distinguish between latent TB and active disease. Positive results may require follow-up (e.g., chest X-ray).

Covered vs. Non-Covered TB Testing

Covered Services (Billed to Insurance)These are considered medically necessary (e.g., symptoms like persistent cough/fever/weight loss, known exposure, high-risk factors, or part of preventive care). We bill your insurance or Medi-Cal. Co-pays/deductibles may apply. A provider evaluation is typically involved.

Non-Covered / Administrative Self-Pay Services Purely for third-party requirements (school, work, sports, volunteering, immigration, etc.) with no symptoms or documented risk factors. These are not billed to insurance to remain compliant. Handled efficiently by our Medical Assistant (MA) as an in-house fee.

  • Important Compliance Note (for Medi-Cal and other payers): Insurance only covers medically necessary testing. Mixing administrative tests into a provider visit can trigger insurance billing/claims issues (potential balance billing issues). Our process keeps records clean and fully compliant.

  • Self-Pay Pricing for Administrative TB Testing: $61.95 (includes placement and reading for skin test; one-visit blood test pricing available upon request). Note: For non-covered tests, you will not be seen by a medical provider unless symptoms/risks are identified.

  • Self-Pay Waiver: All self-pay patients sign a specific TB Testing Waiver confirming the administrative purpose, no medical necessity, and agreement to pay out-of-pocket (we do not bill insurance and you agree not to submit for reimbursement).
